URGENT: Tuesday rally to stop Senate vote on KXL
Howdy -
If you’ve been following the Keystone XL pipeline fight over the last
7 months, it has been a political roller coaster. Just last month
President Obama rejected the pipeline, but this weeks it looks like
Congress could undo that victory – and our Senator Chuck Schumer is
playing a key role in making it happen.
Since last fall, Republicans have been attempting to add KXL
provisions on to every ‘must pass bill’. The President did the hard
thing by rejecting the pipeline, but now Big Oil’s representatives in
Congress want to override him, tacking a proposal for Keystone XL to a
must-pass bill. To make matters worse, Chuck Schumer is helping
broker a deal to get this bill with the Keystone provision passed as
soon as possible.
We will be meeting at noon at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza at 2nd Ave.
between 47th and 46th street. on Tuesday, February 14th (also known as
Valentine’s day) to call him out for bargaining with NY’s climate
future. From there we’ll march to Chuck Schumer’s office at 780 Third
Avenue. All New Yorkers are at risk from rising sea levels and extreme
weather fueled by climate change, and Sen. Schumer should not gamble
with our future.
This action was brought to the OWS Eco-cluster on Saturday and
received the support of many of the individuals involved in organizing
the Bank of America action which will be happening later in the day.
Here are the details:
WHAT: Don’t break America’s heart, Chuck!
WHERE: Hammarskjold Plaza at 2nd Ave. between 47th and 46th streets
WHEN: 12pm SHARP 2/14/12
Please RSVP if you’re planning on coming. Also, there are a number of
special roles that need to be filled, please let me know if you’re
willing to step up and make sure the action runs smoothly.
44 Senators already stand behind the bill, and Big Oil is turning the
screws on other votes they need to pass it. We need to come out strong
to stop them, which is why folks from all around the country are
entering offices of Senators who are in favor of the bill, and
hundreds of thousands will come together online to show their
opposition to the bill. We need to show every Senator that there will
be consequences for supporting this pipeline, and the climate-killing
tar sands.
Don’t hesitate to call me if you have any questions or concerns.
I hope you’ll be able to join us,
Zack Malitz
